Financial Aid (Tiered Tuition)
Merriconeag Waldorf School is committed to creating a school community that reflects the economic diversity of Maine. To this end, the Board of Directors has developed a new tuition model. In this model, families are given the opportunity to apply for a tuition amount that they feel best matches their ability to pay. Then, through a process that considers a family’s income and assets, the School makes a final determination about the tuition that is appropriate based upon the family’s financial means.
To provide the high quality and multi-faceted Waldorf education that is its hallmark, Merriconeag needs at least two-thirds of its families to pay full tuition. Families who choose this option are not required to submit any financial information.
Families who apply for an adjusted tuition amount are expected to hold Waldorf education high on their list of financial priorities and demonstrate a willingness to pay to the maximum extent of their financial capability. A tuition adjustment is not meant to support discretionary items. This does not preclude a tuition adjustment but would be taken into consideration. Please be assured that all information submitted will remain confidential and be given full and fair consideration by the Financial Aid Committee.
Families are required to submit salary and asset information through TADS, a financial aid assessment and tuition management company. Families must also submit supportive financial documents, such as tax returns, W-2s and 1099s directly to TADS. A letter that clarifies financial information and/or family circumstances is strongly recommended. This letter should be included in the documents to TADS and addressed to the Committee.
The level of tuition contributed is determined annually for families applying for adjusted tuition. Unless there is a change in a family’s financial circumstances, the School will make every effort to keep families at the same level of tuition contribution each year.
This new model grew out of ongoing efforts, over Merriconeag’s 25 year history, to make Waldorf education affordable to all families who recognize its benefits and want it for their children. The School is striving to be as full as possible, knowing that greater overall enrollment will result in more financial resources to support the community and the school.
