"Teenage Temptations," a public talk by Douglas Gerwin
Along the path of development, adolescents face two temptations: to grow up too fast or to remain young too long. The first can be seen in physical or material guises such as the earlier advent of puberty, teen pregnancy, adolescent consumerism and independence - the "hurried child." The second appears, perhaps more subtly, through psychological or social guises such as slowed emotional maturity or the deferment of life choices about career or family - the eternal "Peter Pan." Dr. Gerwin will address the particular expression of these temptations in our times - specifically through the lures of drugs, sex and technology.
Douglas Gerwin, Director of the Center for Anthroposophy in Wilton, NH, has taught history, literature, German, music, and life science at the Waldorf high school level since 1983. He presently divides his time between adult education and teaching in various North American Waldorf schools. Douglas is the founder of the Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program at the Center for Anthroposophy and editor of several books related to Waldorf education..

"Assesing Genetic Engineering: Empowering Students to Navigate in a Complex World"
A free public talk by Craig Holdrege
Preparing students to meet the complexities of modern life requires educators to foster careful observation, thoughtful consideration of different perspectives, discerning judgment and sensitive action. Craig Holdrege will discuss this educational task using the example of genetic engineering, a topic of individual, societal and ecological concern.
Craig Holdrege, a biologist and educator, is the founding director of the Nature Institute in rural upstate New York. He was a high school biology teacher in Waldorf schools for 21 years and has worked in Waldorf high school teacher training since 1994. He is keenly interested in the interconnected nature of things and carries out holistic studies of plants and animals. Craig also critically examines new developments in genetics and biotechnology from a contextual perspective. His newest book, co-authored with his Nature Institute colleague, Steve Talbott, is entitled, Beyond Biotechnology. For more information please visit www.natureinstitute.org.
